These Historic European Landmarks Will Leave You In Awe

Here are twenty six interesting and beautiful European landmarks that you must visit. From England to Prague you will see some historical sights that will wanting to see more and more. Most of these landmarks are man made but there are a handful that are all natural. Europe has a many landmarks but this is just a handful.

The Arc de Triomphe

Arc de Triomphe is a very breathtaking view.
The Arc de Triomphe started construction in 1806 in honor for the men who fought and died for France in Napoleonic Wars and the French Revolutionary. Inscribed on the structure are the French victories and generals of the time, there also lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from WWI. This has been an iconic structure and is one of the most beautiful in France. 

Brandenburg Gate


The German Brandenburg Gate located in Berlin.
The Germans started construction on the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin in 1788 and was completed in 1791. This has been one of Germany's best know landmarks and was formally a city gate for Berlin to Brandenburg. The Gate was badly damaged in WWII but was still intact, some renovations took place. It is a beautiful place to take pictures at night and is a must see.

Slovakia

Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and has a population of about 450,000.
This is the city of Bratislava, you can see on the left the Bratislava Castle which was constructed sometime in the 15th century. Since then it has been under many reconstructions and looks different from its original state, still it is a very historical landmark. There is also ruins of another castle and the Cathedral you can see called St. Martin's, this is an ideal place to see how Eastern Europeans live.

Estonia

A photo of the Kadriorg Palace in Tallinn, Estonia.The Kadriorg Palace was constructed for Catherine I of Russia in 1718 and was completed in 1725 by Peter the Great, the czar of Russia at the time. Everything was special made for Catherine but unfortunately she didn't take too much interest in it because of the death of Peter the Great in 1725. When Estonia declared independence in 1919 from Russia it became a state property and serves now as an Art Museum of Estonia. 

Spain

Being one of the largest museums in Spain, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a museum of contemporary and modern art. It was opened by Juan Carlos I of Spain in 1997 and cost about $97 million US dollars. This is a must see building with all the art inside and the architecture outside.Guggenheim should be on every ones list if they are taking a vacation to Spain. 

Albania

An old castle by the name of Krujë Castle in Krujë, Albania.
Krujë Castle is a castle in Albania that was a part of Skanderbeg's battle against the Ottoman Empire and is now a national museum and a Turkish Bath. It was said that the Albanians were able to hold out three massive sieges by the Turks during the Albanian Revolt in 1434. Now this has become a place of inspiration to the Albanians and is a beautiful sight to visit. 
Slovenia

This is a fascinating place to visit, in the middle of the lake you have Bled Island which houses a church which was built sometime in the 17th century and has not been altered since. People still visit the church to this day and weddings are held here as well. There is a lot of history in this region so if you are looking to see some history here is the place for you. 
Cyprus

The Kykkos Monastery is located on the island state of Cyprus in the Mediterranean sea. The monastery has been burnt down many of times and is not what it originally looked like when it was first built. There are many beautiful mosaic pieces that depict the Virgin Mary as this is was the Holy Monastery of the Virgin of Kykkos and was established in the 11th century. 
Iceland

A monstrous waterfall found in the mountains of Iceland.
A very popular tourist attraction in Iceland, Gullfoss is a roaring waterfall that captivates all of the tourist and locals who come to see this magnificent sight. When you walk up to Gullfoss it looks like the river drops off into nowhere but really its just the rocks obscuring the view making it seem like it tricks you. The waterfall has been used in pop culture such as being used for music videos and album covers.
